Gentle stain removal

A gentle way to lift stubborn surface stains.

A controlled stream of fine particles helps remove selected external stains and discoloration without the vibration of a traditional dental drill.

Air Abrasion used at Advani Family Dental in Sunnyvale, California

Air abrasion uses a controlled stream of fine particles to help remove selected external staining and discoloration from the surfaces of teeth.

Unlike a dental drill, nothing rotates against the tooth. The fine stream works across the surface to help lift certain stains, making it a useful tool when we want to improve the appearance of teeth conservatively.

At our practice, we use air abrasion for surface stain removal and cosmetic/whitening applications, not for preparing fillings.

What it means for you

Targeted stain removal

Air abrasion can help remove certain stubborn external stains from tooth surfaces.

No drilling

There is no rotating dental bur involved in the process.

Conservative

Treatment focuses on surface discoloration without unnecessarily removing healthy tooth structure.

A brighter, cleaner appearance

Depending on the type and cause of discoloration, air abrasion can complement professional cleaning and cosmetic whitening care.

In the chair

  • We first evaluate the type and source of the discoloration.
  • A controlled stream of fine particles is directed toward selected stained areas while suction is used throughout the procedure.
  • We then reassess the tooth surface and determine whether any additional cleaning, polishing or whitening treatment would be beneficial.

Frequently asked questions

Is air abrasion the same as teeth whitening?

Not exactly. Air abrasion primarily helps remove certain external surface stains. Professional whitening works differently and is designed to lighten tooth color. Depending on your needs, the approaches may complement one another.

What kinds of stains can it remove?

It is most useful for selected external stains on the tooth surface. Effectiveness depends on the source and depth of the discoloration.

Do you use air abrasion for fillings?

No. In our practice, air abrasion is used for surface stain removal and cosmetic applications rather than cavity preparation or fillings.

Will it make my teeth whiter?

Removing external staining can make teeth appear cleaner and brighter. If you want to change the underlying shade of your teeth, we can discuss professional whitening separately.
